Bretton Woods
Encyclopedia Article
Bretton Woods, vacation resort in northern New Hampshire, in the town of Carroll, Coos County. The resort encompasses 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres) and is set in the White Mountains on the north bank of the Ammonoosuc River, southwest of Berlin. A charter for the land was granted by King George III of England to the governor of New Hampshire. Named for Bretton Hall in Yorkshire, England, the area was the site, in 1944, of the Bretton Woods Conference, where the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development were founded.
