Edwin Howland Blashfield (1848-1936), American painter, known best for his public murals. Blashfield was born in New York City and educated in Paris, France. His murals were done in the tradition established by John La Farge, a 19th-century American painter who spent most of his life working on murals and stained glass artwork. Blashfield decorated more than a dozen public buildings, including the rotunda in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Blashfield also designed a number of mosaics during his career.
