Venezia Giulia
Encyclopedia Article
Venezia Giulia, name given to a region of Italy in existence from 1918 to 1947 (between World Wars I and II). Located at the head of the Adriatic Sea, Venezia Giulia formerly comprised the Italian provinces of Gorizia, Trieste, Pola, and Fiume. For statistical purposes the province of Zara was included as well. It had an area of 8960 sq km (3460 sq mi). By the terms of the Italian peace treaty, signed February 10, 1947, most of Venezia Giulia was awarded to Yugoslavia or incorporated in the Free Territory of Trieste. Only a thin strip along the western edge of the former province of Gorizia remained with Italy, and it was joined with Udine Province to form the modern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
