New Waterford, town on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, on the Atlantic coast, 14 km (9 mi) northeast of Sydney and 330 km (210 mi) northeast of Halifax. New Waterford was incorporated in 1913. Coal mining is important in the vicinity, and much of the coal is obtained from beneath the sea. Population 7,695 (1991); 10,185 (2001).
