New England Plateau
Encyclopedia Article
New England Plateau, high tableland in eastern Australia, overlapping parts of southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. The plateau, part of the Eastern Highlands, extends south from Tenterfield for 190 km (120 mi) and rises to a height of about 1,600 m (5,100 ft) at Ben Lomond. The Clarence, Macleay, Manning, and Hunter rivers and their tributaries drain the steep eastern edge, and tributaries of the Darling River drain the western slopes. Dense forests of eucalyptus trees add to the attractiveness of the eastern region of the plateau.
