Liffey (river), river 80 km (50 mi) long in the eastern part of Ireland. The Liffey rises in the Wicklow Mountains 3 km (2 mi) north of Blessington, in northwestern Wicklow County, and flows in a circuitous course to reach Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea. It runs southwest into Kildare, turns northwest, and then cuts back northeast into Dublin Bay. Ballymore Eustace, Kilcullen, Newbridge, Lucan, and Dublin are among the communities on the banks of the river.
