Lenin Peak (Russian Pik Lenina), second highest mountain in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, located in Tajikistan, in the former Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (also known as the Badakhshoni Kuhi Viloyat), in the Trans-Alai Range of the Pamirs. The peak rises 7,134 m (23,406 ft) above sea level. Originally named Mount Kaufman, it was renamed in honor of Vladimir Ilich Lenin. Originally thought to be the highest mountain in the Soviet Union, it was later found that Ismail Samani Peak, also in Gorno-Badakhshan, is higher (at 7,495 m/24,590 ft).
