Johan Falkberget
Encyclopedia Article
Johan Falkberget (1879-1967), Norwegian novelist, whose works expressed a deep sympathy for the rural mining community in which he grew up. Falkberget was born near the city of Røros, Norway, an old mining community. When Falkberget was eight, he started working in the copper mines surrounding the city. In 1907 Falkberget published the novel Svarte fjelde (Black Mountains), a story about mining.
Beginning with Den fjerde nattevakt (The Fourth Watch, 1923), Falkberget wrote a series of novels that depict the early life of the mining community of his childhood. In Christianus sextus (1927-1935), he wove historical documents, folklore, and personal and family reminiscences into a massive trilogy. Set in the 18th century, Christianus sextus glorifies the virtues of peace and labor.
