Encyclopedia Article
Thomas Couture (1815-1879), French painter, whose one famous painting, The Romans in the Decadence of the Empire (1847), is in the Louvre, a famous museum in Paris, France. Couture was born in Senlis. An excellent teacher, his pupils included noted French painter Édouard Manet and Pierre Cécil Puvis de Chavannes. The Romans in the Decadence of the Empire is more noteworthy for subject matter than for artistic quality.
