Columbia (city, Mississippi), city in south central Mississippi, the seat of Marion County, located on the Pearl River. Founded in 1811 as Lott's Bluff, the town was given the name of Columbia in 1821. It was named after the capital city of South Carolina, from which many of the region's early settlers came. From February 1821 to November 1822 Columbia served as the temporary state capital for Mississippi. Columbia became a city in 1910. Population 6,815 (1990); 6,603 (2000); 6,408 (2005 estimate).
