Chokeberry, small shrub, member of the rose family. Native to eastern North America, the chokeberry is grown as an ornamental plant. The several species of chokeberry all have glossy leaves and clusters of small, white flowers that bloom in spring. Many of the species are named for the color of their small fruits, which hang in clusters. The purple chokeberry typically grows to a height of 3.7 m (12 ft), the red chokeberry reaches a height of 3 m (10 ft), and the black chokeberry grows to 1.2 m (4 ft). Scientific classification: The chokeberry is a member of the family Rosaceae.
