Encyclopedia Article
Ugo da Carpi (1455?-1523?), Italian wood engraver, named for the town near Modena where he was born. Carpi improved upon the German technique of making shaded wood engravings by using several blocks: one for the outline and others for different shades. He named the process chiaroscuro, and his earliest known print in the method dates from 1518. Examples of Carpi’s works can be seen in most comprehensive collections of engravings.
