Timoleon

Timoleon (lived 4th century bc), Greek politician and general of Corinth, Greece. Having overthrown the tyranny of his brother Timophanes in Corinth, Timoleon retired from public life. However, he was prevailed upon to defend the Greek cities in Sicily against Dionysius the Younger, who was tyrant of Syracuse, Sicily, from 367 to 357 bc and from 346 to 344 bc. Timoleon defeated Dionysius and exiled him around 344 bc. Then he fought the Carthaginians, who supported the other tyrants of Syracuse, at the battle of Crimessus in 341 bc. Timoleon took measures to stabilize the economy and government of Greek Sicily before again retiring from public life.
