Skiffle
Encyclopedia Article
Skiffle, British popular music style, using improvised percussion instruments such as tea chests and washboards. Skiffle was introduced by singer and banjo player Lonnie Donegan in the mid-1950s. Donegan popularized American folk songs such as 'Rock Island Line' (1953)-a hit in Britain in 1955 and in the United States in 1956-and 'Cumberland Gap' (1957). Skiffle gave way to British beat music in the early 1960s.
