Ska, upbeat style of Jamaican pop music. A precursor of reggae, ska (also known as bluebeat) developed from rhythm-and-blues music and mento, a hybrid that combined African folk-music traditions with calypso. Ska emerged in the early 1960s as a predominantly instrumental genre, and was epitomized in the United States by the music of a band called the Skatalites. Its predecessor, a slower style called rock steady, evolved in the later 1960s. In the late 1980s, the term skacid was coined for a speeded-up ska with rap and electronic effects.
