Jean Baptiste Pigalle (1714–1785), French sculptor. His subjects range from the intimate to the formal, and include portraits. In 1744 he carved the marble Mercury (Louvre, Paris), a lively, naturalistic work.
Pigalle studied in Rome, Italy, from 1736 to 1739. In Paris he gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of Louis XV. His works include Venus, Love and Friendship (1758, Louvre, Paris), a nude statue of Voltaire (1776, Institut de France, Paris), and the grandiose Tomb of Maréchal de Saxe (1753, Strasbourg).
