James Martineau

James Martineau (1805–1900), British Unitarian minister and philosopher, the brother of writer Harriet Martineau. He served as a preacher in Liverpool, England, from 1832 to 1857 and as professor of mental and moral philosophy at Manchester New College from 1840 to 1869. Martineau was an effective orator and a prolific writer, whose works include Rationale of Religious Inquiry (1836) and Ideal Substitutes for God (1879).
