Encyclopedia Article
Alma Mahler (1879–1964), Austrian pianist and composer of lieder (songs). She was born Alma Schindler, the daughter of artist Anton Schindler. She abandoned composing when she married Austrian composer Gustav Mahler in 1902. After her husband’s death in 1911 she married German American architect Walter Gropius. Their daughter Manon's death inspired Austrian composer Alban Berg to write his Violin Concerto (1937). Alma Mahler later married Austrian writer Franz Werfel.
