Bohumil Hrabal (1914–1997), Czech writer, known for his richly lyrical interpretations of everyday life. Hrabal first became known as a writer of prose in 1963 with his Perlicka na dne (A Pearl on the Bottom), a collection of short stories. Over 3 million copies of his books have been printed in the Czech Republic, and his works have been translated in 27 languages. Hrabal’s novels typically depict ordinary people caught up in events they do not control or comprehend. The motion-picture adaptation of his most popular book, Ostre sledované vlaky (Closely Watched Trains, 1965), won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1967.
