Gray (radiation)

Gray (radiation), international unit of measure of absorbed radiation dose. Used in the International System of Units, it is abbreviated Gy. The gray replaces the rad (1 Gy equals 100 rad) and is defined as the dose absorbed when 1 kilogram of matter absorbs 1 joule of ionizing radiation. Different types of radiation cause different amounts of damage for the same absorbed dose. The international unit of dose equivalent is the sievert.
