Sir Jacob Lewis Deventer (1874–1922), South African soldier, who became second-in-command to General Jan Christiaan Smuts in the Boer invasion of Cape Colony. During World War I, he commanded the Allied forces in East Africa from May 1917 until the colony was captured. He was knighted in 1917 and made honorary lieutenant-general in 1919.
