Michael William Balfe (1808–1870), Irish composer and singer, best known for his opera The Bohemian Girl (1843). At the age of 16 he was a violinist and baritone at the Drury Lane Theatre in London, England. In 1825 Balfe went to Italy, where he sang in Palermo and at La Scala opera house in Milan. In 1846 he was named conductor at London’s Her Majesty's Theatre.
