Axis, in mathematics, one of the reference lines by which a point on a graph may be located. The horizontal axis is usually referred to as the x-axis and the vertical axis as the y-axis. The term axis of symmetry is used to refer to the imaginary line about which an object may be said to be symmetrical—for example, the diagonal of a square. The term axis of rotation refers to the line about which an object may revolve.
