Julian Rossi Ashton (1851-1942), Australian landscape painter and art teacher. His work includes a number of watercolors, such as The Milkmaid (1888; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney), painted in part in the open air, which captures the hues of crisp winter sunlight. In 1895 he established an influential art school in Sydney, known today as the Julian Ashton Art School. Ashton’s students included Australian painter William Dobell.
