The Immigrant, motion-picture comedy about the plight of poor new immigrants to the United States. Released in 1917, this silent film short stars Charlie Chaplin as an immigrant. The man wins some money in a card game on the ship to America and gives it to a pretty girl in need. He later attempts to retrieve some of the money and is accused of theft. Cleared of the crime, he arrives in New York and quickly becomes destitute again. He meets the girl again on the street, and together they try to make a new life for themselves.
