The Silent World, motion-picture documentary about life beneath the sea. This was the first feature-length documentary made by Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Released in 1956, this French film won the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. With the help of Louis Malle, Cousteau documented the wonders of undersea life in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. A pioneer of undersea photography, Cousteau helped invent waterproof housing for cameras. Cousteau later made World Without Sound (1964) and directed a long-running television series called “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau.”
