The Caine Mutiny, motion picture about a fastidious ship captain whose crew believes he is going insane, based on the novel by Herman Wouk. Released in 1954, this critically acclaimed box-office hit stars Humphrey Bogart as Captain Philip Francis Queeg. The captain imposes a strict disciplinary code on the U.S.S. Caine, with a manic emphasis on cleanliness. His obsession with a spotless vessel drives him to distraction and eventually causes an accident, and Lieutenant Steve Maryk begins to suspect that Queeg is suffering from stress and starts to keep a record of the man’s behavior. His compatriot Lieutenant Tom Keefer slyly suggests that Queeg has indeed lost his mind, and that steps should be taken by Maryk to wrest command from the suffering man.
