Swoon
Encyclopedia Article
Swoon, motion picture about two men who kill a young boy to see if they can get away with it, based on the Leopold-Loeb murder case of 1924. Released in 1992, the film won an award at the Sundance Film Festival for cinematography. Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold are young, very rich, and homosexual. They get caught after they kill a boy and send a ransom note to his parents. Their attorney Clarence Darrow (played by Robert Read) argues in court that their sexuality is a form of mental illness and asserts that, since they are insane, they should not get the death penalty. Two other movies are based on the Leopold-Loeb murder case, Rope (1948) and Compulsion (1959).
