Psycho
Encyclopedia Article
Psycho, motion picture about a deranged innkeeper and his mother, based on a novel by Robert Bloch. Released in 1960, the film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and stars Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, the innkeeper. Janet Leigh earned a Golden Globe Award for her performance as Marion Crane, the young woman who stops for a night at the Bates Hotel and gets murdered by a figure in a dress while taking a shower. At first it seems that Bates’s mother killed Marion, but later it turns out that Bates has a habit of dressing up in his mother’s clothing and murdering unlucky travelers.
