Patton
Encyclopedia Article
Patton, motion-picture dramatization about the military life of General George S. Patton, Jr., based on the books Patton: Ordeal and Triumph by Ladislas Farago and A Soldier's Story by General Omar N. Bradley. Released in 1970, this film won seven Academy Awards including best picture and best actor for George C. Scott’s portrayal of the World War II (1939-1945) general. Patton was known for his abrasive public persona and for disobeying the orders of higher commanders while simultaneously achieving dramatic, aggressive wartime victories—namely, over German general Erwin Rommel in Africa, and in the Battle of the Bulge.
