Oliver Twist (motion picture), British motion-picture adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel of the same name. Released in 1948, the film chronicles the adventures of Oliver Twist (played by John Howard Davies), an orphan in 19th century England who runs away from a workhouse and joins a band of youthful pickpockets. A sinister character named Fagin (Alec Guinness) houses the gang of boys and manages their criminal activity. When Twist gets caught stealing from a wealthy man (Henry Stephenson), the man discovers that Twist is his nephew.
