Goodfellas, motion picture chronicling one man’s experiences in the Mafia, based on Nicolas Pileggi’s biography of Henry Hill. Released in 1990, the film won New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. Hill grows up working for the Mafia and enjoys the trappings of success, but he becomes uncomfortable with the violence of his profession. After being arrested for trafficking cocaine, Hill testifies against the Mafia in court and joins the Federal Witness Protection Program. Joe Pesci won an Academy Award for his performance as the short-tempered gangster Tommy DeVito.
