Fanny & Alexander, motion picture about two children who grow up in a large, boisterous household until their mother remarries. Released in 1982, this Swedish film, directed by Ingmar Bergman and based on stories from his own life, won four Academy Awards. The theatrical Ekdahl family provides a warm environment for Fanny and Alexander. Their widowed mother abruptly marries a stern, cold pastor, and the children are whisked away to live in his castle. However, their family friend, the mysterious Isak Jacobi, still watches over them. This film, which runs more than three hours in length, deals with family relationships, religion, theater, and magic.
