Escape from Alcatraz (motion picture), dramatization about a man who escapes from Alcatraz prison, based on a book by J. Campbell Bruce. Released in 1979, this film stars Clint Eastwood as the convict Frank Morris, who is transferred to the supposedly escape-proof prison after a long record of previous escapes. Conditions at Alcatraz are terrible. The warden systematically beats down any rebellious or intelligent prisoners, and many of the more agreeable prisoners lead lives of great despair. The cold genius Morris takes this as a challenge and sets to work on escaping.
