French Congo, former colony of France in west central Africa, consisting of Gabon and Middle Congo (present-day Republic of the Congo). Libreville, Gabon, was its capital. French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza established French protection over the region in 1891 after signing treaties with local rulers. French Congo became part of French Equatorial Africa in 1910.
