Virginia Union University, private, coeducational institution in Richmond, Virginia. Founded in 1865, the school is affiliated with the Baptist Church (see Baptists). The university confers bachelor’s, doctoral, and professional degrees in a broad range of fields. It offers courses of study in the arts and sciences, business administration and management, law, education, theology, and drama therapy. A joint degree in engineering is offered in cooperation with Howard University in Washington, D.C.; the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
