Middle Tennessee State University, public, coeducational institution in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, part of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee. The school was founded in 1911. The university confers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a wide range of fields. It offers courses of study in the arts and sciences, the fine arts, arts administration, business administration and management, fashion design and technology, fashion merchandising, education, environmental science, agriculture, agronomy and crop sciences, wildlife management, computer science, engineering, aviation technology, industrial arts, film studies, music and music business, library science, law, paralegal studies, health sciences, and medical technology. A joint degree in engineering is offered in cooperation with other universities, including the University of Tennessee and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Research facilities at the university include the Center for Popular Music.
