The school was founded in 1663 as Le Séminaire de Québec by the first bishop of Québec, François de Montmorency Laval. In 1852 Queen Victoria granted the seminary the right to grant university degrees, and its name was changed to Université Laval. The university confers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a broad range of fields.
