USS Arizona Memorial
Encyclopedia Article
USS Arizona Memorial, national memorial established in 1980. Located in Honolulu, Hawaii, the memorial commemorates the United States servicemen who died during the surprise air attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese military forces on December 7, 1941. The attack, in which 21 U.S. ships were either sunk or damaged, induced the United States to enter World War II (1939-1945) the next day. More than 1,000 crewmen went down with the Arizona and remain buried at sea. The floating white memorial, built in 1962, was designed by architect Alfred Preis. It is 56 m (184 ft) long and was built over the spot where the Arizona sank during the attack. The hull of the battleship lies 2.4 m (8 ft) beneath the memorial in 12 m (40 ft) of water and can be viewed from the memorial. The only portion of the ship visible above water is the mast. The names of the men who died are engraved on a marble wall within the memorial. Owned by the United States Navy and administered by the National Park Service.
