Padre Island National Seashore, national seashore established in 1968, originally authorized in 1962. Located in the Gulf of Mexico off the southern coast of Texas, the site preserves 129 km (80 mi) of Padre Island. Considered the longest barrier island in the world, Padre Island features white beaches, sand dunes, grasslands, and ponds. A body of water called the Laguna Madre lies between the island and the mainland. The island was named for Padre Nicholas Balli, who acquired the land in the early 19th century. Recreational activities include swimming, surfing, sailing, fishing, and bird-watching. Administered by the National Park Service. Area, 52,785 hectares (130,434 acres).
