Moores Creek National Battlefield
Encyclopedia Article
Moores Creek National Battlefield, national battlefield designated in 1980, originally a national military park established in 1926. Located in southeastern North Carolina, the park commemorates a conflict during the American Revolution (1775-1783). The battle at Moores Creek Bridge took place on February 27, 1776, between American revolutionists and Americans loyal to the British. The victory by the revolutionary troops helped increase the strength of their cause in the southern colonies and halted the British attempt at taking North Carolina. The park includes a trail to the battle site, remnants of fortifications and earthworks, and field exhibits and markers. Administered by the National Park Service. Area, 36 hectares (88 acres).
