Blue Ridge Parkway, national parkway established in 1936. This scenic parkway in Virginia and North Carolina stretches for 760 km (470 mi) along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Shenandoah National Park and Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The parkway features many recreational, historical, and cultural landmarks. North Carolina sites include the Brinegar Cabin, a log building built in the 1880s; Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, with its manor house and horse and carriage trails; the Southern Highlands Folk Art Center near Asheville; and the Museum of North Carolina Minerals near Gillespie Gap. Virginia sites include the early 1900s Mabry Mill; Trail Cabin, built in the 1890s; and numerous parks and scenic mountain overlooks. Administered by the National Park Service. Area, 37,794 hectares (93,390 acres).
