University of Puerto Rico System
Encyclopedia Article
University of Puerto Rico System, public, coeducational system of higher education consisting of 11 campuses on the island of Puerto Rico, a United States territory. The university system traces its roots to 1900, when a teacher-training school called the Puerto Rico Normal School was founded in the Rio Piedras section of San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital. In 1903 the legislature of Puerto Rico designated the school the University of Puerto Rico. In 1911 a land-grant college was established in Mayagüez as a branch of the university. In 1950 a medical school branch of the university was launched in San Juan. Campuses were added in Humacao, Cayey, and Arecibo in the 1960s, and in Ponce, Bayamón, Aguadilla, Carolina, and Utuado in the 1970s.
