Windows Live® Search Results John Naber, born in 1956, American swimmer, who won four gold medals at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Naber was born in Evanston, Illinois, and was educated at the University of Southern California (USC), where he won 10 national collegiate titles in individual (nonrelay) events. At the 1976 Olympics Naber won the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke races, setting world records at both distances. He also swam on the winning 4 × 100-meter medley and 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay teams, both of which set world records. In addition, Naber placed second in the 200-meter freestyle race, finishing behind teammate Bruce Furniss. In 1977, in recognition of his accomplishments, Naber won the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, given annually by the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States (AAU) to the outstanding amateur athlete in the country. He later served on the organizing committee for the 1984 Summer Olympics, which were held in Los Angeles. He was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1984.
