Bulawayo is the chief town. Cereals, sugar, and cotton are principal products. Gold and other minerals are mined. The region is historically important as the home of the Ndebele (Matabele) ethnic group. The Ndebele, led by Lobengula, rose in 1893 against the British South African Company, which had assumed control in 1889. They rose again in 1896 but were defeated.
