Encyclopedia Article
Sunda Islands, one of the chief island groups of the Malay Archipelago, lying between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean and forming (except as noted below) part of Indonesia. In physical geography the group is divided into the Greater Sunda Islands which include Sulawesi (Celebes), Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and various smaller islands; and the Lesser Sunda Islands, extending generally east from Java and including Bali, Sumba, Flores, and Timor. Borneo includes the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as the sultanate of Brunei.
