Mesa (geology) (Spanish, “table”), level land on top of isolated rock formations having steep rock cliffs for sides. Mesas, once parts of larger plateaus, are found in the southwestern United States, particularly in Colorado. When diminished in size by natural forces, they are known as buttes.
