Tonkin
Encyclopedia Article
Tonkin, also Tongking, historic region of Southeast Asia, constituting the northern part of Vietnam. France gained control of Tonkin in the late 19th century. In the 1880s France incorporated Tonkin into the Indochinese Union, popularly called French Indochina, which also included Annam in central Vietnam; Cochin China in southern Vietnam; Laos; and Cambodia. The Indochinese Union broke apart at the end of World War II (1939-1945), with the territory eventually becoming the independent countries of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
