Daniel Emmett (1815-1904), American actor and songwriter, born in Mount Vernon, Ohio. In 1842 he formed the first minstrel show troupe. His company, the Virginia Minstrels, performed in New York City and Boston and in Britain. Emmett was a prolific composer of popular songs, the best known of which are “Dixie” and “Old Dan Tucker.”
