Apollonius of Perga

Apollonius of Perga, called the Great Geometer, Greek mathematician, who lived during the late- 3rd century and early-2nd century bc. He was born in Perga, Pamphylia (now Turkey). Apollonius wrote on arithmetical calculation and on statistics and laid the foundation for the geometry of position with his Treatise on Conic Sections, which originally contained eight books. Apollonius also made important contributions to Greek astronomy, particuarly by applying geometric models to the movement of planets.
